Poker is a card game in which players bet on the strength of their hand. It’s a game that’s very easy to pick up and play, but it takes a lot of practice to become good at. In this article, we’ll talk about some basic things you should know to get started.
The first thing to learn about poker is that it is almost always played with chips. Each chip has a value, usually indicated by its color. The most common value is a white chip, which is worth one dollar. There are also red, blue, and black chips that represent higher values, such as five, ten, and twenty dollars respectively. Each player must buy in for a minimum amount of money (representing the pot) before the cards are dealt.
Once everyone has their two hole cards, there’s a round of betting. This is initiated by 2 mandatory bets called blinds placed into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer.
Then the players take their turns putting into the pot a number of chips equal to or higher than the last player’s bet. If a player wants to raise, they must say “raise,” and the other players must either call their new bet or fold. If they fold, they’re out of the pot until the next deal.
