Casinos earn billions of dollars each year for the companies, investors and Native American tribes that own them. They also rake in profits for local and state governments that regulate them. The owners and operators of casinos invest in extravagant inducements to attract big bettors, whom they call “high rollers.” These players get free rooms, meals, tickets to shows, limo service and airline tickets.
Although some games have a small element of skill, the vast majority of casino gambling is purely chance. The mathematical odds of winning and losing in games such as poker, craps, baccarat, and blackjack are uniformly negative (from the player’s point of view). The house always has an edge over the players.
