Recent natural disasters around the world show how fragile human life is and the importance of disaster preparedness. In recent months, various worrying incidents have been reported, ranging from floods, earthquakes, to forest fires. The latest earthquake hit Türkiye on August 23, 2023, with a magnitude of 7.0. The epicenter of the earthquake was near the city of Adana, causing significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. Hundreds of people were forced to flee, and rescue teams worked non-stop to search for victims among the rubble. Meanwhile in Indonesia, a major flood disaster hit Jakarta in early September 2023. Days of heavy rain caused rivers to overflow, submerging thousands of houses and schools. Forest fires are also a serious issue in Australia and the United States. In California, fires raging through forest areas approaching the city of San Francisco have forced thousands of residents to evacuate. Thick smoke has blanketed the region, posing a health risk to residents. Meanwhile, Australia is experiencing a prolonged dry season, worsening conditions for forest fires in the New South Wales region. Climate change plays a major role in increasing the frequency and intensity of these natural disasters. Research shows that higher global temperatures are driving the growth of weather extremes, such as tropical storms and heavy rainfall. In this context, tropical cyclone “Kimi” hit the Philippines bringing strong winds and heavy rain, resulting in floods and landslides on the island of Luzon. Preparedness and rapid response are key in dealing with natural disasters. Governments around the world have increased efforts in disaster education and training for communities. In Japan, evacuation drills are carried out regularly to anticipate possible earthquakes. Meanwhile in Europe, disaster mitigation programs have been designed to reduce the impact of disasters that may arise due to climate change. International organizations, such as the UN, also play an important role in providing humanitarian assistance and funding for the rehabilitation of disaster-affected areas. With global collaboration, it is hoped that it can increase community resilience in facing natural disasters and speed up the recovery process. Through a better understanding of the causes and impacts of natural disasters, it is hoped that society can be better prepared and resilient in facing unexpected disasters in the future.
